The Advantage Sod Has Over Seeded Grass

Hello, my name is Emily Green. Welcome to my website about home maintenance and repairs performed by general contractors. When I bought my first house, absolutely everything was in perfect condition. After living there for several months, however, I started to notice a slight decline in the finishes of certain materials in my house. I suspected that the items needed care, but I did not know how to proceed. A general contractor helped me learn everything I needed to know about home maintenance and repairs. I created this site to share this knowledge with my readers. Come by again soon to learn more.

Sod refers to grass and a thin layer of dirt underneath that comes in large rolls and strips. It is used to put grass quickly and easily on a lawn, and is commonly used for playgrounds, golf courses, sports fields, and residential lawns. Sod offers a number of advantages over traditional seeded grass, and knowing the differences between the two allows you to make an educated decision about whether or not sod is the right fit for your needs:

The Advantages of Sod

Speed - Installing a sod lawn means that as soon as the sod is unrolled, there is grass on your lawn. It is almost instant, and while there is a period where the grass has to take root in the soil underneath the sod and fill in the lines between the rolls, sod allows you to instantly gain grass where you previously had none.

Savings -  Sod does not require the maintenance that growing grass from scratch does. You do not have to nitpick your lawn, searching for weeds and apply fertilizer, to ensure that your grass grows healthy and quickly.

Prevents Soil Erosion - Sod prevents the erosion of topsoil, where the greatest amount of nutrients and organic matter is located, by presenting a barrier that prevents water runoff. This ensures that your grass will stay healthy and thick for a longer period of time.

Better Quality -  Sod offers better quality for your lawn, as the grass is grown professionally under ideal conditions, and as a result tends to be much thicker and healthier than any grass that you could have grown by yourself in your lawn. Professionally grown grass, by virtue of simply being healthier, will last much longer than home grown grass as well.

Considerations

Upfront cost - Though sod will save you more in the long run, you do have to take into account the fact that sod comes with a greater upfront cost that is not ideal for those under a budget.

Immediacy - Once you purchase sod, you have to install it as soon as you receive it. Any time spent idle can result in damage to the roots, which can cause complications later on in your lawn's life.

Watering - Immediately after installation, sod can require extensive and constant watering, or even irrigation, to ensure that it properly takes root and grows to its full potential. If this is not adhered to, your lawn can suffer in the long run, and grow thin and with spacing between rows of sod. To learn more, contact a company such as Ag Services Of Maui.
