3 Kitchen Design Mistakes To Avoid

Hello, my name is Emily Green. Welcome to my website about home maintenance and repairs performed by general contractors. When I bought my first house, absolutely everything was in perfect condition. After living there for several months, however, I started to notice a slight decline in the finishes of certain materials in my house. I suspected that the items needed care, but I did not know how to proceed. A general contractor helped me learn everything I needed to know about home maintenance and repairs. I created this site to share this knowledge with my readers. Come by again soon to learn more.

There are few other spaces in a home that are more important than the kitchen. As the entertainment capital of your home, the homework center and the place to feed your family, it's important that this space be as functional as possible, which begins with the right design. Design mistakes can make your time spent in the kitchen more of a nightmare than an enjoyable experience. If you're designing a new kitchen or looking to upgrade your current one, make sure you know which design mistakes to avoid.

Forgetting Counter Space

Undoubtedly, a common complaint among many homeowners is a lack of countertop space in the kitchen. In many instances, this all comes down to poor design. First, consider how you use your kitchen. For example, do you entertain often or do your children do their homework or special projects in the kitchen?

If the answer is yes, it's important that you design ample kitchen storage so that you can keep your countertops as clear as possible. If you don't plan for enough storage, you will end up with countertops that are too cluttered to use.

Cabinet Layout

When deciding where to install cabinets in your kitchen, make sure you aren't forgetting about function. Some people get so caught up in the look of their cabinets that they forget they also serve a purpose. In terms of layout, always try to have a cabinet that is designed to accommodate the type of utensils or kitchenware you need to use in a particular area.

For example, don't install a spice kitchen cabinet on the opposite side of the kitchen from the stove. Functionality wise, it makes far more sense to install this type of cabinet in the part of the kitchen where you will use the spices the most. Work with a company like Black Swamp Cabinetry to design the best cabinets for your situation.

Overlooking The Triangle

Ideally, you should be designing this space with the kitchen triangle in mind. The kitchen triangle is the part of the kitchen that houses the refrigerator, sink and stove. When cooking, you will need to constantly utilize each of these three areas.

Having all these spaces in a general location is much more efficient than having to walk to one side of your kitchen to access the refrigerator and another for the sink or stove. When you design your kitchen with the sink, stove and refrigerator all making up different points of a triangle, cooking will be more efficient.

Make sure you are putting in a considerable amount of effort to design a kitchen that's suited to meet the needs of your family today and well into the future.
