Are You a Warehouse Maintenance Manager? Be Sure to Review These Tips for Handling a Roof Leak with Your Crew Each Season
One of your biggest responsibilities as a warehouse maintenance manager is training your crew on how to handle those unexpected emergencies that threaten the safety of the workplace. While your company should already have a roofing maintenance plan in place, the truth is that leaks can happen anytime. Unfortunately, even a minor leak in the warehouse can add up to costly damage to the inventory and property. As the new season rolls around, be sure to review these strategies for properly handling a roof leak with the members of your crew.
Initiate Safety Procedures
Water leaks in a warehouse pose an instant safety risk, and your crew must work fast to minimize the risk of slip-and-fall injuries. Ideally, they should restrict access to all areas where water is puddling on the floor. Make sure that your crew has caution tape, floor signs, and other warning signals that they can use to stop people from entering the wet zone. If possible, your crew should also try to collect the water using buckets, and they should mop up any moisture that makes it on to the floor.
Take Steps to Preserve the Property
Once a safety zone is established, have your crew remove any items that could be damaged by the water. Ideally, these items should be relocated to a dry area until the roof problem is completely fixed. Keep in mind that even items on a shelf could be damaged if the leak becomes extensive.
Check for Other Leaks
Roof leaks occur due to wear and tear that often exists in more than one place, and water can sometimes run in multiple streams to different areas of larger buildings. Ask your crew to perform a thorough check of the warehouse for additional leaks that might not yet be identified. If one is found, then they need to follow the same steps as they did with the first one to preserve the property.
Report and Request Repairs
Commercial roofing repairs and replacements must be done as soon as possible after a leak is found. Establish a reporting system that allows any member of your crew to alert you and any other managers to the problem so that you can arrange for repairs right away.
